The process is long and involves tons of work. Not only does one have to think about asking a designer whose work you admire to be part of the team, picking a printer who excels in fine art books, selecting someone to write the foreword, writing our own artists' statement, penning the copy for the dust jacket, but there is pricing and signing up for an IBSN (those bar codes you see on the back of dusk jackets.)
This represents a periodically-updated timeline, with both stills and links to videos, on the making of NEW ORLEANS that was released November of 2020.
It all really started with our exhibition, months in the
making, at Through This Lens in Durham, NC.
For the design, we selected good friend Andy Lyons
with whom we often worked over the years.
We called Brilliant, the fine art printer who did
SALLY MANN's A Thousand Crossings.
After lots of back and forth — the final
selection and book order of the photographs.
Several iterations later, Andy Lyons sends us
another update; we will edit out the sub-title.
An Artists' Statement, credits, etc. had to be written,
and a request for someone to write the foreword.

After doing the separations, Brilliant sends stills
and videos of the first pass of NEW ORLEANS.
We receive our first set of press proofs for the
book that we study for color, exposure, etc.
Less than a week later, we receive final press
proofs and a dummy showing the signatures.
We make our selections from Brilliant's samples for
cover, foils, inside cover papers, and head bands.
Andy describes his background, history with us,
then recaps his view of the whole book process.
The book goes on press at Brilliant in Exton, PA,
and the team pays close attention to detail.
The pages are all printed and are now being folded
into signatures at Brilliant in Exton, PA.

gets its title embossed and foil stamped.
